This seven-day journey stays in the south — the Poland that most travelers fall in love with first. Kraków's medieval Old Town is the anchor: the largest market square in Europe, a castle hill that rivals Prague, and a Jewish quarter that has become one of the most creative neighbourhoods in Central Europe. From there you move into the Tatra Mountains, the dramatic granite range on the Slovak border where highland culture — wooden churches, shepherd's cheese, thermal springs — has survived largely unchanged for centuries. Zakopane, the mountain town at the foot of the Tatras, is where Poles have come to hike, ski, and eat smoked cheese since the 19th century. The route ends back in Kraków with time to revisit what you missed. This is Poland distilled to its most essential southern chapter.
Detailed Itinerary
Every day is designed with breathing room. Sleep in, take a detour, linger at lunch — the itinerary flexes around you, not the other way around.
Day 1
Into the medieval heart of southern Poland.
Arrival at Kraków Airport. Your private driver takes you to your hotel in the Old Town. The afternoon is free to explore the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall, and the Planty park ring. Welcome drink at a rooftop bar overlooking Wawel Hill.
Day 2
A private historian unlocks eight centuries.
Full-day private tour of Kraków with a medieval historian. Morning on Wawel Hill: the Royal Castle, the Cathedral, the Sigismund Bell. Afternoon through the Old Town: St. Mary's Basilica, the underground museum beneath the Market Square (archaeological remains of medieval Kraków discovered during renovation), and the Barbican fortification. The evening in Kazimierz — dinner in a restaurant converted from a 15th-century prayer house.
Day 3
Salt chapels and painted villages.
Morning at the Wieliczka Salt Mine — the Chapel of St. Kinga, the underground lakes, and the salt-crystal chandeliers. Afternoon drive south into the Małopolska countryside: the wooden churches of the Carpathian foothills (UNESCO-listed since 2003), the painted village of Zalipie where every surface — houses, fences, dog kennels, wells — is decorated with floral folk art, and the first views of the Tatra Mountains on the southern horizon.
Day 4
Into the mountains where highland Poland begins.
Morning transfer south to Zakopane (2 hours). The town sits at 800 metres at the foot of the Tatra Mountains — the highest range of the Carpathians, with granite peaks reaching 2,500 metres. Zakopane became Poland's mountain resort in the 1890s when the artist and architect Stanisław Witkiewicz created the Zakopane Style — wooden villas with steep roofs and carved ornamentation inspired by highland folk art. Afternoon walk through the Krupówki pedestrian street, the old wooden cemetery, and the Jaszczurówka Chapel. Evening: a traditional highland dinner with live góral music, oscypek smoked cheese, and lamb stew.
Day 5
Granite peaks and shepherd's huts above the tree line.
Full day in the Tatra Mountains with a highland guide. The morning hike follows the Dolina Strążyska valley to Polana Strążyska clearing, or for stronger walkers, the trail to Morskie Oko — the largest lake in the Tatras, set in a glacial cirque beneath granite walls at 1,395 metres. Midday stop at a shepherd's hut (bacówka) for oscypek cheese-making: the highland shepherds still bring their flocks to the mountain pastures each summer and make the smoked sheep's cheese over open fires in the traditional way. Afternoon: the Gubałówka funicular for panoramic views of the entire Tatra range, or thermal springs in the nearby town of Bukowina Tatrzańska.
Day 6
A final afternoon in the city you now know.
Morning at leisure in Zakopane — the market for highland crafts, a last walk along the wooden villa streets. Transfer back to Kraków after lunch. The afternoon is yours: revisit the Old Town, explore the contemporary art scene at MOCAK (Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków) in the former Schindler factory complex, or simply settle into a Kazimierz café with a book. Farewell dinner at a restaurant of your choosing — your guide will have recommendations.
Day 7
Transfer to Kraków Airport.
Final breakfast in the Old Town. Private transfer to Kraków Airport. For travelers extending, we can arrange connections to Warsaw, Gdańsk, or across the border to Bratislava and Vienna.
