Arrival in Lisbon

Your private driver meets you at Humberto Delgado Airport and carries you into the city along the broad sweep of the Tagus — your first encounter with that particular quality of Lisbon light, silver-gold and softer than anywhere else in Europe. After settling into your hotel in the historic centre, the rest of the day belongs to you. Day 2

Highlights of Lisbon

Two thousand years told in stone, tile, and song.

Your private guide — a Lisboeta with a historian's eye and a storyteller's tongue — leads you through the layers of the city starting at Restauradores Square, where Portugal's break from Spain in 1640 is still celebrated in the square's very name. A ride on the famous Bairro Alto funicular gives you sweeping views over the river and rooftops before you descend through Chiado — its elegant cafés and bookshops unchanged since Fernando Pessoa ordered his daily brandy — and into Baixa, the perfectly gridded Pombaline district rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 destroyed the medieval city. Through Rossio Square and the history of the reconstruction, the route continues into the Alfama, Lisbon's oldest and most intimate quarter, where you'll visit the Sé Cathedral and emerge from its cool darkness into the sun-warmed Commerce Square and the broad Tagus beyond. Day 3

Sintra Excursion & Belém

Palaces in the clouds, monuments to the sea.

Forty minutes west of Lisbon, the Serra de Sintra rises from the Atlantic plain in a rush of granite and ancient forest, its ridgelines bristling with the towers and turrets of palaces built by kings who wanted to live inside a dream. Your guide meets you at Pena Palace — a gloriously eccentric confection of domes, battlements, and canary-yellow walls perched above the treeline — and leads you through its terraced gardens where the mist comes and goes all morning. Below, the town of Sintra's cobbled lanes wind between quintas and convents that have been here since the Moors. On the return to Lisbon, your driver swings through Belém — the maritime district where Portugal's great age of discovery began — to see Jerónimos Monastery, whose Manueline carved stone celebrates the sea with ropes, coral, and armillary spheres, the Tower of Belém standing at the river's mouth, and the Monument to the Discoverers. Day 4

First-Class Train to Porto

Three hours north, a different city entirely.

After breakfast, your private driver takes you to Lisbon's Santa Apolónia station for the first-class Alfa Pendular train to Porto — three hours through the Portuguese countryside as the landscape shifts from the dry Ribatejo plains to the green valleys of the north. It is one of Europe's most comfortable and civilised train journeys, and the first-class carriage gives you the window seat to watch Portugal scroll past. At Porto's Campanhã station, your private driver is waiting to carry you to your hotel in the historic centre. The afternoon and evening are entirely yours, and Porto is a city that rewards immediate wandering: walk down to the Ribeira waterfront where the old wine-boat quay is lined with restaurants serving bacalhau à Brás and cold vinho verde, cross the lower deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot with the whole copper-coloured city behind you, or simply follow the azulejo-tiled alleyways uphill until you find yourself on a terrace overlooking the Douro with a glass in hand.

Porto Highlights

The city that invented port wine and never quite got over it.

Your Porto guide — a native of the city who studied its architecture and history before becoming one of its best interpreters — meets you after breakfast for a walking tour of Porto's UNESCO World Heritage old town along the Douro. The morning begins at São Bento Station, whose entrance hall is lined with 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history in sweeping panoramic scenes — quite possibly the most beautiful train station in the world. From there the route winds past the Lello Bookshop, whose dramatic neo-gothic staircase and carved wooden galleries have made it the most famous bookshop in Portugal, through the Clérigos quarter and its baroque belltower to Porto Cathedral on its granite promontory where the whole copper-coloured city spreads below. A walk downhill through the medieval streets brings you to São Francisco Church, whose interior is so thick with gilt carving that the stone beneath has disappeared entirely. The afternoon is free to continue exploring — perhaps a port wine tasting at one of the historic lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, or a stroll through the Bolhão market.

Day 6

Douro Valley — Full Day

Terraced vines, river light, and wine that has been here for centuries.

Today belongs entirely to the Douro Valley — a full day in one of Europe's most extraordinary landscapes. Your driver and guide head east from Porto, the road climbing as the city gives way to the first terraced vineyards and the valley opens into the UNESCO World Heritage scenery that gave port wine to the world. The route begins in Amarante, a handsome riverside town whose medieval bridge and the São Gonçalo Church are reflected in the Tâmega below. From there the road winds deeper into the valley to Régua, where the terraces become steeper and more dramatic with every bend. At the renowned Quinta do Seixo overlooking the vines, a wine-maker leads you through the cellars and pours a tasting paired with a vineyard lunch — the wines tasting of the Douro itself, sun-warmed stone and wild herbs. The afternoon continues to Pinhão, the valley's most picturesque village, whose tiny railway station is a gallery of azulejo tiles depicting harvest scenes in the blue-and-white tradition. The drive back to Porto in the evening light, the terraced hillsides catching the last sun, is a visual memory that stays.

Departure

Your last Portuguese morning belongs entirely to you.
